THE SAND HILL REVIEW http://www.sandhillreview.org 2003
Sorrow
have you ever watched—
two birds fight
for a crumb of a scrap,
in that flurry of
squawks and feathers
attention of others is caught
and they jump in with their cause,
already lost in the cracks
between stone and bulldozer,
between two hearts that need to keep
beating,
between scattered teenagers
in a coffee house line
and the one left outside—
already lost;
to the want of just a little bit more,
to what they thought was already
theirs,
to the earth that does not care,
what is laid there.
