 Deer in the Garden

They step carefully into the dusk,

follow herds of cars nose to nose on the grade

where the highway leads into town.

They know every garden,

how to manage the chain link fence,

wait for the gate to slip open,

unhinge their passage.

The boundary between worlds

grows thin.

Some sit around the patio,

forelegs placed like elbows

on the picnic table.
